SSL Certificates

Published: April 29, 2025

An SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate is a digital certificate that authenticates the identity of a website and encrypts information sent to the server using SSL technology.

When a web browser contacts your secured website, the SSL certificate enables an encrypted connection. It’s kind of like sealing a letter in an envelope before sending it through the mail.

SSL certificates also inspire trust because each SSL certificate contains identification information. When you request an SSL certificate, a third party (known as a Certificate Authority, or CA) verifies your organization’s information and issues a unique certificate to you with that information. This is known as the authentication process.

This information is visible to customers who visit your secured website, when they click on the lock icon in the browser’s address bar or on the seal of the Certificate Authority if it’s displayed on the site.

In summary, an SSL certificate serves two functions:

  1. It authenticates the identity of the website, fostering trust among visitors.
  1. It encrypts the data being transmitted, which secures the data from being intercepted and read by unauthorized parties.
