What are DNS records?

DNS records are the set of instructions that live in the DNS Zone and provide information about a domain. This includes what IP address is associated with that domain and subdomains, what mail server email should be sent to, and more.

Common Types of DNS Records

A Records – Defines an IPv4 for the hostname.

AAAA Records – Defines an IPv6 for the hostname.

CNAME Records – Maps a subdomain to another domain, not IP.

MX Records – Defines a mail server name to send emails to.

TXT Records – Defines text entries, often used for security and verification purposes.

CAA Records – Defines which Certificate Authorities can issue SSL Certificates for the domain.

SRV Records – Defines ports and routes information for specific services such as phone systems, and messaging.
