Name servers are a fundamental part of the Domain Name System (DNS), which is like the phone book of the internet. They play a crucial role in directing web traffic to the correct locations
When you type a website address (or domain name) into your browser, your computer doesn’t inherently know where that website is located. It needs to find out the corresponding IP address, which is a numerical label like 45.88.202.107 that identifies the actual location of the website on the internet. This means that Name Servers indicate where your DNS settings are managed, and where you should add or remove records.
This is where name servers come in. They hold a directory of domain names and their corresponding IP addresses. When your computer asks for the IP address of a specific domain name, the name servers provide the answer, directing your computer to the correct website
In essence, name servers act as guides, helping your computer find the websites you’re looking for on the vast internet. They ensure that when you type in a domain name, you’re taken to the right location.
This means that Name Servers indicate where your DNS settings are managed, and where you should add or remove records. Name Servers usually come in pairs at the minimum and at the maximum you can have six at Epik. You can usually tell the host because the subdomain hostname will appear such as:
- NS3.EPIK.COM
- NS4.EPIK.COM
Just remember to take note that any changes to the Name Servers must be done at the domain’s registrar.
