The short and simple answer is – YOU. Your domain name is your brand, your business, your gimmick, your passion… it is whatever you want it to be! Choosing the right domain name is absolutely critical to burning it into your potential clients’ memories when they hear it. A catchy domain name will never be forgotten and a bad domain name will never be remembered.
(Now for the boring stuff…)
A domain name is an identifying name or label for an address (or website) on the web. It’s essentially a human-readable form of what’s called an IP Address, which is a numerical value that represents a computer network and its location on the web.
For example, the domain name “epik.com” represents a specific IP address. Since humans are not very good at reading and remembering numbers, we instead use domain names, which are a much more efficient way to remember websites and interface with the Internet.
In more technical terms, a domain name is a string of characters that maps to a specific IP address. The Domain Name System (DNS) is responsible for this mapping. When you type a domain name into your web browser, the DNS translates that domain name into the corresponding IP address, directing your browser to the correct website.
